Friday night, August 4, the police raided a family card game in Denton County because of illegal gambling operation. A father and his son were arrested and the police handed out 11 citations.
The operations last Friday busted a house in the 800 block of Highland Village Road and confiscated almost $8,000 by the Highland Village and Lewisville police.
"It scared the living daylights out of us, and it made me feel like a criminal, when I know that none of us there are criminals" said Jimmy Ray Everett, 59. His home was the target of the raid. Jimmy Ray Everett along with his son, Carley Ray Everett, 35, were arrested.
The father and son were allegedly keeping a gambling place, gambling promotion and communicating gambling information.
"They said, 'our wives don't want us playing at our house; why don't we just play at your house and you just take money to cover the costs?'" Jimmy Everett said. He explained to the police that he only ran friendly games for his buddies.
Everett said the only expenses they had were for food and nothing more. "It was just for our little group doing what we thought was okay."
Everett defended the police's actions, that the police are merely doing their job, even though he had to spend an evening in jail. "They treated everybody, I think, fairly."
Everett said that he had learned his lesson the hard way. He does not plan to host any more gambling games. "I love to play cards; we all do - but not at that expense."
